Police identify body recovered from Hudson

The Bethlehem Police Department said a body was pulled from the Hudson River on Tuesday evening near the North Albany Terminal Co. in Bethlehem.

He was identified Wednesday as David P. Betterton Jr., a 41-year-old Dutchess County man. Police had initially said he appeared to have been in the water for a long time, and the investigation verified that.

He was reported missing to the New York State Police in Wappinger Falls on Jan. 19. The investigation determined that his body became snagged on a barge that was coming from New Jersey through the Hudson River channel on Tuesday and subsequently dislodged while it was docked at the North Albany Port Terminal.

An autopsy Wednesday determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma and asphyxia due to drowning. Foul play has been ruled out and the investigation has been closed.
