Students at Maple Avenue Middle School spent part of the morning standing on the grass outside the school after a fire alarm malfunctioned, school officials said.
A fire alarm went off in the gymnasium at 7:10 a.m., they said. Staff and first responders determined that new fire alarm system was malfunctioning and reset the alarm. They directed school buses to pick up students as normal, and had students wait on the buses.
But resetting the alarm took longer than anticipated, and the buses were needed to pick up elementary school students, school officials said.
So they had the buses drop students off in front of the school, and they waited outside until the alarm was reset. They were able to enter the building at 8:40 a.m., school officials said.
The school day normally starts at 7:56 a.m., with students allowed into the building at 7:30 a.m.
