Columbia, Averill Park, Cohoes, Hoosic Valley and Fort Ann got the No. 1 seeds today in their respective classifications for the Section II softball tournaments.

The tournament opens Tuesday with one Class C play-in game, which sends No. 17 Schoharie to No. 16 Fort Plain in a meeting of Western Athletic Conference teams.

The five championship games are scheduled for May 29 at Clifton Common.

Columbia, which finished 14-2 in the Suburban Council, got the top seed in Class AA over Shenendehowa, which finished 15-1. Both of Columbia's league losses were to Averill Park, the top seed in Class A. Shen beat Averill Park, but lost to Columbia.

"There was a lot of discussion. We have our own section point value and the Suburban Council has their own point value rating," Section II softball coordinator Cathy Allen said. "In the discussion it was even brought up it should be Columbia No. 1, Shen No. 2.

Troy, a two-time champ, was seeded second to Averill Park on the basis common result in a tournament against Fairport of Section V. Scotia-Glenville got the fourth seed in Class A.

Ichabod Crane and Cohoes both finished 13-1 in the Colonial Council, and split their two games. Cohoes, though, got the top spot in Class B because of a greater run differential in their head-to-head matchups with Ichabod Crane. Perennial postseason threat Mechanicville is the No. 4 seed.

Last spring's Class C finalists, Duanesburg and four-time champ Greenwich, got the second and fourth seeds, respectively. Hoosic Valley tops the bracket, with Maple Hill third.

Last year's Class D finalists are on track for a rematch, with Fort Ann again No. 1 and Loudonville Christian School second.
