Northway reopened after Malta, Colonie crashes

Both traffic accidents on the Northway this afternoon — one at Exit 12 near Malta and one in Colonie

Both traffic accidents on the Northway this afternoon — one at Exit 12 near Malta and one in Colonie between exits 4 and 5 — have been cleared and all lanes reopened, state police said.

Interstate 87 in Colonie reopened about 6:15 p.m., about three hours after that crash. State police have called the accident a “serious personal injury accident,” but have provided few other details.

The other accident happened in the northbound lanes of the Northway, with all lanes cleared and reopened by 4:50 p.m., state police said.

That crash happened when a tractor-trailer lost its driveshaft and became disabled in the center lane. A following car struck the driveshaft and also broke down. Both vehicles leaked fluid.

Each of the incidents caused traffic to slow to a crawl both on the Northway and alternate routes.
