A city man is accused of violating an order of protection by assaulting a woman and then trying to hide from police in a bathtub, authorities said.

Herbert Stephenson, 24, of Rugby Road, faces one count of first-degree criminal contempt, a felony, as well as several misdemeanors.

Stephenson is accused of violating the order of protection Monday evening at his Rugby Road residence by choking his girlfriend by putting pressure on her neck, according to papers filed in court.

Stephenson is also accused of punching the woman while she held a small child.

When police responded, Stephenson is accused of refusing their orders to come out with his hands up and instead hid in the apartment bathtub.

The misdemeanors Stephenson faces are third-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, obstructing governmental administration and endangering the welfare of a child.
