A school-wide search at Niskayuna High School today didn’t turn up any drugs or other illegal substances, according to the school’s website.
Niskayuna Police and New York State Police K9 units assisted in the 40-minute search of every hallway and locker area in the school. The school was in a lockdown drill during the search.
Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra Jr., in an email sent to parents as the search started this morning, wrote that the search was not precipitated by any specific information but was a “precautionary measure, and an effort to show how serious we are about keeping (illegal items) out of our school.”
Tangorra added that since he assumed the superintendent position last spring, “many people” have shared concerns with him about drug and alcohol use among students.
“The issue is far from unique to Niskayuna,” Tangorra Jr. wrote in the email. “Yet, in our community, we must do everything we can to safeguard the well-being of our young people and keep these items out of our schools.”
