A 53-year-old city man who died in custody at the Schenectady County Jail last weekend likely died of a heart attack, Sheriff Dominic Dagostino said.
An autopsy this week listed that as Jimmy Richardson’s tentative cause of death, Dagostino said. A final determination is expected later.
Jail guards found Richardson, most recently of Emmett Street, unresponsive in his cell the morning of Jan. 17 after he didn’t get up for breakfast call, Dagostino has said.
He was at the jail on a felony criminal contempt charge, held on $2,500 bail.
Dagostino said an internal investigation is nearing its completion, but he said everything indicates all policies and procedures were followed.
The completed investigation will be submitted to the state Commission of Correction, which will then determine if further investigation is needed.
