Hockey: No. 1 Quinnipiac stuns RPI in overtime

The top-ranked Quinnipiac University men edged out 17th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 5-4

The top-ranked Quinnipiac University men edged out 17th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 5-4 in overtime on Friday night at Houston Field House, as Soren Jonzzon scored just 15 seconds into overtime.

The Bobcats, who improved to 23-2-6 overall (14-1-4 ECAC Hockey), battled back from a pair of one-goal deficits in the third period to earn the win, while the Engineers dropped to 15-12-6 (7-6-6 ECAC Hockey).

Viktor Liljegren gave the Engineers a 4-3 lead at 16:16 of the third period, but Quinnipiac tied it on a goal by Devon Toews with just 2:04 left in regulation.

HAMDEN, Conn. — Quinnipiac defeated Union College to clinch the first ECAC Hockey regular-season title in program history, and pushed the Dutchwomen’s winless streak to 50 games.

Quinnipiac’s Taylar Cianfarano scored four straight goals — one at the end of the first period and three in the second — on 10 shots. Goaltender Sydney Rossman made 13 saves in her 14th shutout of the season.
