College lacrosse: No. 6 UAlbany beats No. 4 Yale in OT

Battle to top-ranked teams.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Seth Oakes scored his fourth goal of the game 1:07 into sudden-death overtime Saturday, lifting sixth-ranked University at Albany to a 14-13 men’s college lacrosse non-conference win over fourth-ranked Yale.

It is the first win over a top-five team for UAlbany (10-2) since it defeated top-ranked Loyola in the first round of the NCAA tournament on May 10, 2014. It’s also the team’s first victory over an opponent ranked in the top-10 since defeating Yale in the Capital District on April 18 of last year. UAlbany, which has won seven straight, will have a chance to go into the top-5 in the rankings for the first time since 2007.

Yale (10-2) sent the game into overtime when Jeff Cimbalista scored with six seconds left in regulation.

“This game was as advertised, we knew this was going to be a hard fought game, Yale is a very good team, and we are as well,” UAlbany coach Scott Marr said. “Great effort by both teams, but very proud of our effort, being able to bounce back in overtime and get the win. Cannot say enough about our senior leaders, who kept the guys rolling in this game.”
