The University at Albany men’s lacrosse team will be facing a familiar rival in the first round of the NCAA Division I Tournament.
The Great Danes (12-3) will travel to Syracuse to take on the eighth-seeded Orange (11-4) on Sunday night at 7:30 in the Carrier Dome.
The two teams met earlier this year, with Syracuse posting a 16-7 win. The Orange exploited UAlbany’s weakness at the faceoff X that day, winning 20 of 27 draws to maintain control of the ball.
The Great Danes were ranked fourth in the nation in both major polls before getting upset by Hartford in ovedtime in the America East Conference tournament semifinals on Thursday in Albany.
The Great Danes have made three straight appearances in the NCAAs.
In 2013, UAlbany was sent to the University of Denver for the first round, and suffered a 19-14 setback.
In 2014, the Danes defeatd Loyola 13-6 in the first round before losing to Notre Dame 14-13 in the second round.
The Fighting Irish also eliminated UAlbany 14-10 last year, after the Danes rolled over Cornell 19-10 in the first round.
