Searchers found an escaped zebra dead Monday morning after in apparently fell off a steep cliff in a Greene County forest preserve, state Department of Environmental Conservation said Monday.

Searchers found the 5-month-old, 200 pound zebra near Route 23A, between Palenville and Haines Falls in the Kaaterskill Wild Forest Preserve, the DEC said.

The DEC identified the zebra as having “escaped from Bailiwick Animal Park in Catskill.” However, a man who answered the phone at the park identified a different owner of the zebra who is not affiliated with the park. A posting on the park’s Facebook page indicated the same, with a message that the animal was “not our zebra Zazu.”

DEC forest rangers and environmental conservation officers, state police and “the owner of the zebra” helped in the search.
