Fort Plain Mayor Guy Barton died Friday following a brief illness.

Fort Plain Mayor Guy Barton died Friday following a brief illness.

Barton, who had been mayor of Fort Plain for 11 years, died in Cooperstown, according to an obituary posted on Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home’s website. Barton was 69. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Harry Hoag Elementary School on High Street in Fort Plain.

Before serving as mayor, Barton was a village trustee from 1975-1986, and served in the Army Reserves from 1965-1978, according to the obituary. Barton also worked as a school bus driver for more than 40 years. He graduated from Fort Plain High School.

Barton is survived by his wife, daughter, son and three grandchildren.
