The driver of a minivan reported stolen in Schenectady was killed and two passengers seriously injured in a crash early today in Colonie.

Colonie police said a member of the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department had attempted to stop the 2004 Ford Freestar before the crash.

Around 2:51 a.m., the driver was heading westbound on Central Avenue and hit a utility pole near Route 155, then overturned. The driver died at the scene and the two other occupants were taken to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries. Their identities are not being released until their families can be notified.

Investigators closed Central Avenue in both directions between Route 155 and Colonie Plaza after the accident. Police expect to reopen it later this morning.
