Schenectady Police on Sunday arrested and charged a man with attempted murder after he allegedly lit his stepfather on fire.
Andrell J. Leppanen, 29, allegedly intentionally threw gasoline on his stepfather and lit him on fire on Friday, causing significant injuries that led to the victim being airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, police said. Leppanen was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, arson and criminal mischief, according to police.
The incident happened on Friday at 925 Bridge St. in Schenectady just after 9 a.m., according to police. Officers and paramedics arrived at the scene and found a man with injuries that required “immediate lifesaving medical attention.” His condition is unknown, police said.
Police have not released the victim’s name, however a family member identified him on Friday afternoon as Kevin Hawkins. His family has been told Hawkins, 50, is expected to survive.
Leppanen and Hawkins got into an altercation Friday, and the incident ended with Leppanen lighting his stepfather on fire. 925 Bridge St. is the upstairs apartment in a two-story brick building. Hawkins was taken via helicopter to Westchester Medical Center and its burn unit.
Leppanen has been arraigned and is being held in Schenectady County Jail. The New York State Police assisted in the search for Leppanen.
