No. 20 Union falls to Holy Cross

Brett Mulcahy scored twice during Holy Cross’ four-goal third period Tuesday, and the Crusaders held

Brett Mulcahy scored twice during Holy Cross’ four-goal third period Tuesday, and the Crusaders held off a late Union rally to post a 6-4 non-conference college hockey victory over the 20th-ranked Dutchmen.

The loss snapped a six-game unbeaten streak for Union

(6-2-1), which was coming off its weekend sweep of Capital Region-rival RPI.

The Crusaders (4-1-1) and Dutchmen traded goals in the first two periods. Danny Lopez gave Holy Cross a 1-0 lead at 6:12 of the first period. Sebastian Vidmar tied it 2:42 later.

Mike Barrett’s power-play goal just over two minutes into the second period made it 2-1 for the Crusaders. Anthony Rinaldi got that goal back for the Dutchmen midway through the period.

Scott Pooley ignited the third-period outburst for Holy Cross at 6:23. Mulcahy scored his two goals 1:46 apart to five the Crusaders a three-goal lead.

The Mulcahy goals were important and Vidmar and Spencer Foo scored late in the third to pull Union within one. But T.J. Moore iced the win on an empty-net goal with 46 seconds left.

Union goalie Jake Kupsky made 29 saves.

Earlier Tuesday, the Dutchmen’s Alex Sakellaropoulos was named ECAC Hockey goalie of the week. He helped Union to the two wins over RPI.
