When Dale Stanavich wasn’t piling up yards and touchdowns as Amsterdam’s new featured running back, he was keeping opponents from doing the same.

“He made a lot of tackles,” Amsterdam coach Doug Edick said of the all-state Class A first-team free safety. “Over the last two years, if we didn’t have him back there, we would have given up a lot more points. He was a game-saver. He made plays.”

Among the the New York State Sportswriters Association Class A all-state second-team picks are Ryan Deguire of Mohonasen (all-purpose) and Jake Warren of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (defensive tackle), who last month were named the Daily Gazette’s players of the year.

The all-state Class AA first team includes running back Joey Ward of New York public school champion Troy.

Stanavich excelled defending the pass and the run and finished his senior season with 75 tackles, two interceptions, five pass break ups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He returned one of those interceptions for one of his 24 touchdowns.

“He has very good football instincts, and he’s a sure tackler,” Edick said. “A great tackler.”

Stanavich broke through many of them on his way to 1,504 rushing yards as the Rugged Rams lead tailback. The Section II Class A Player of the Year also caught 14 passes for 370 yards.

He played fullback as a junior, and, after taking over for his brother Bryan, ran for 20 touchdowns, caught three scoring passes and threw for two touchdowns.

“He’s an explosive player,” Edick said of the Daily Gazette first-team selection. “He’s an exciting player, catching the ball, returning the ball. He even threw the ball.”

In 10 games for the Section II semifinalists, Stanavich ran for over 100 yards nine times with highs of 260, 235 and 211 yards.

“He was one of the kids we asked to take on more responsibility,” Edick said. “He had an amazing season.”

Stanavich helped Amsterdam capture the 2015 Section II Class A title.

Playing quarterback for the first time since his sophomore year with Mohonasen’s junior varsity, Deguire ran for 2,011 yards — the second-highest total in Schenectady County history — and had a hand in 31 touchdowns.

Warren anchored the Spartans defense which made great strides in the second half of the season. The Class A second-team defense also includes Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake linebacker Connor McClernan and Averill Park defensive back Ryan Wood.

The Class AA second-team group includes Guilderland receiver Steven Fedorchak, Troy quarterback John Germinerio and Flying Horses’ defensive back Joe Casale.
