Capital Region jobless rate at 4 percent

Slight rise from 3.9 percent in November

The Capital Region ended the year with a 4.0 percent unemployment rate for December 2016, a slight increase from 3.9 percent in November 2016 and a slight decrease compared with the 4.1 percent reported in December 2015.

The state Department of Labor announced the statistics Tuesday, and the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area again enjoyed one of the lowest unemployment rates in New York state.

The statewide average jobless rate for metropolitan statistical areas was 4.4 percent in December 2016, and the average for counties outside designated metropolitan statistical areas was 5.5 percent. Unemployment rates among the metropolitan statistical areas ranged from 3.4 percent (Ithaca) to 7 percent (Watertown).

For counties in and around the Capital Region, the following unemployment rates were reported for December 2016 and December 2015, respectively:

Albany: 3.8, 3.9
Fulton: 5.7, 6.0
Montgomery: 5.8, 6.1
Rensselaer: 4.1, 4.3
Saratoga: 3.8, 3.9
Schenectady: 4.1, 4.2
Schoharie: 5.5, 5.4

The December 2016 unemployment rate was 4.5 percent for the state and for the nation as a whole.
