ALBANY -- An Albany man taken into custody Friday on a parole warrant is a suspect in the hit-and-run death of a woman in Washington Park, police said Monday.

Jose Martinez, 30, is accused of leaving the scene of a property damage accident on Washington Avenue minutes before someone struck and killed 21-year-old Rajine Martinez in the park, police spokesman Officer Steven Smith said.

Martinez also faces a misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operation charge related to the earlier crash, Smith said. His license had been suspended at the time of the crash. Details of the parole warrant were unavailable on Monday.

"He is not charged in the (Washington Park) incident," Smith said.  "However, he is being considered a suspect at this time."

The investigation of the death of Rajine Martinez, who is no relation to Jose Martinez, continues, Smith said. She was struck at about 4 a.m. on Feb. 4 in a park roadway near New Scotland Avenue. Police have since said they located the SUV that may have been involved.

Smith said the victim was lying in the roadway semi-conscious when she was struck. Two bystanders had been trying to help her from the road.
