COLONIE — Nationwide used-car superstore chain CarMax will open its first Capital Region location on Feb. 23.

The store sits on more than 11 acres at 1860 Central Ave., at the corner of New Karner Road, where a Kmart and a Burger King once stood. A staff of 20 is in place, and the Richmond, Virginia-based company expects to have up to 200 vehicles on the lot when it opens. Interior space totals about 39,000 square feet.

The new dealership has been in the works for years; the old Kmart was demolished in 2014 in preparation for the project.

CarMax is the largest used-car retailer and the third-largest wholesaler in the nation. It operates more than 160 stores in 39 states nationwide and expects to add 13 to 16 more stores each in 2017 and 2018. The next-nearest stores to the Capital Region are in Rochester and Hartford, Connecticut.

CarMax promotes itself as offering vehicles with a posted price that is not subject to haggling, sold by salespeople who are paid a fixed commission that is not based on vehicle sale price.

Car shoppers who don’t find what they want at their local store can go online and search the company’s entire inventory, which usually numbers around 50,000 vehicles. The company will move cars between dealerships at shoppers’ request, sometimes with a delivery fee.
