GUILDERLAND -- An afternoon fire led to the evacuation of several apartments Monday afternoon, but no injuries, fire officials said.
The fire started just before 1:30 p.m. at 108 Patroon Drive in Heritage Village.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke and ensured the building was evacuated, Westmere Fire Chief Henry Smith said.
Firefighters were helped in that effort because the fire happened when many residents were at work, Smith said.
Firefighters also zeroed in on the apartment with the fire and soon doused the blaze, Smith said.
"It was a good stop by all," he said, noting several surrounding departments assisted. "What could have been a real bad fire was knocked down very, very quickly."
Smoke detectors worked properly, he said.
Investigators worked mid-afternoon to find the cause, Smith said. Once they're finished, residents of apartments near the fire scene should be allowed to return.
