I was very sad to learn that the Nicholaus block had been demolished. That beautiful and historic structure was one of Schenectady’s most interesting links to the past.
I only had one opportunity to visit the Nicholaus Restaurant many years ago, during a business trip to Schenectady. To me, it seemed to be a prototypical “men’s bar,” although it had long been open to women as well. The tin ceiling and the paintings on the walls, along with the famous bay window turret, made this building a unique and memorable place.
It’s a shame that we couldn’t save it, and I’m disappointed that the folks who tore down the building next door weren’t a little more careful to protect their neighbor.
