GLENVILLE — The town's first hotel is open for business.

The $16 million Homewood Suites by Hilton had a "soft opening" Tuesday, becoming the second of three hotels to open in the wake of significant development along the Schenectady waterfront.

Located on the Mohawk River on Freemans Bridge Road, the five-story, 106-room hotel features an indoor pool, an outdoor patio, a business center and views overlooking the water. It employs 24 people and opened just over a year after a ceremonial groundbreaking.

Room rates start at $179 per night, though the price varies depending on time of year and type of room. Eight rooms include balconies overlooking the river.

On the lower level, there is a lobby with a television and a fireplace. The hotel will serve breakfast there seven days a week and will host a social hour on weeknights. Guests can access a patio, which has furniture and a grill.

Next to the lobby is a business center, which is decorated with images of the Nott Memorial at Union College and a home in the Stockade. Just around the corner is a conference room that can accommodate 49 people.

Also on the lower level is a small fitness room and laundry area. Next to those rooms is an indoor pool that is 3 to 4 feet deep and overlooks the Mohawk River.

The hotel is accepting reservations, and a grand opening is planned for June 29, hotel managers said.

The property on which the hotel was built is owned by Pat Popolizio, who also owns the Waters Edge Lighthouse restaurant next door and is hoping to rezone property he owns directly across the river in order to accommodate townhouses. That development is in its very early stages, he said.

“My intention is to make both sides of the river complement each other,” he said.

The Homewood Suites is one of three hotels to pop up within a mile of one another. The other two are on the Mohawk Harbor development on the Schenectady side of the river. Here’s a look at each of those facilities:
