Union College broke ground Friday on a $100 million science and engineering center that's been called the most ambitious construction project in the private college's 222-year history.

The project is an expansion and renovation of the Integrated Science and Engineering Complex will "transform the school’s historic approach to interdisciplinary engagement by creating a fully unified and integrated complex," the school said in a statement.

The complex will be completed in phases over the next two years. This includes an addition completed for fall term 2018 and renovation of three sections of the existing S&E Center by fall 2019.

The project's financing includes a $70 million loan through the Schenectady County Community Resource Corp.

The chairman of the college's trustees, John E. Kelly III, and college President Stephen Ainlay were among those who spoke at the ground-breaking.
