Local restaurant owner injured after being hit by car

Schenectady man charged with leaving the scene of an accident

CLIFTON PARK — A man recently struck a Clifton Park restaurant owner with his vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the elderly woman badly injured, according to police.

Christopher Jones, 57, of Schenectady, was arrested after he hit Stephanie Van Auken, 74, of Clifton Park, with his car, police said.

Police gave the following account:

Around 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, Jones was driving out of the parking lot of the Ravenswood Pub in Clifton Park before he struck two people, Van Auken, and another man. Jones, whom police allege was driving while drunk, drove away on Route 146 after hitting the victims and returned to his home in Schenectady. He did not report the accident to the police.

A short time later, police located Jones’ gray Subaru at his home and arrested him. He was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, as well as leaving the scene of an accident, a felony. According to police reports, while Jones also refused to take any alcohol or drug tests, he exhibited glassy eyes and impaired speech upon his arrest.

Van Auken sustained two fractured hips, a fractured ankle, a fractured foot, and torn tendons and ligaments in her right knee from the accident. She is well-known in Clifton Park, and was previously the owner of Mama’s Family Restaurant. Van Auken also used to own Brick House Pizza & Grille on Clifton Country Road.

An attempt to reach a member of Van Auken’s family on Friday night was unsuccessful.
