Two Mexican immigrants, arrested in Spa City, face deportation after sentencing

ALBANY — Two of the 16 immigrants arrested May 30 in Saratoga Springs were sentenced Thursday for illegally re-entering the country and could be deported, federal prosecutors said.

Juan Martinez-Garcia and Jorge Reyes-Merino, both 27 and from Mexico, were sentenced in U.S. District Court by Judge Mae D’Agostino to 38 days in jail, according to Acting United States Attorney Grant Jaquith and Thomas Brophy, acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Buffalo field office.

They were then placed in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security for removal proceedings, prosecutors said.

By pleading guilty, Martinez-Garcia and Reyes-Merino admitted they returned illegally to the United States from Mexico after being removed from the country; Martinez-Garcia was deported on July 26, 2010, and Reyes-Merino was deported on Nov. 9, 2011.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward Grogan prosecuted the case.

Martinez-Garcia and Reyes-Merino were among nine immigrants arrested May 30 in Saratoga Springs by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. The other seven people arrested face administrative immigration violations. Of the 16 immigrants arrested, 15 were Mexican and one was Guatemalan.

Two weeks later, on June 14, nine Mexican immigrants and one Guatemalan were arrested in the city. Three of them were charged with illegal re-entry. An unaccompanied minor was also arrested.

Two more Mexican immigrants were arrested on June 20; one, Victorico Catarino Ramirez, was charged with visa fraud.

According to court documents, an abandoned backpack containing falsified green cards and other forms of identification that was discovered May 30 at the Hudson Falls Post Office led customs officials right to Ramirez's door.
