ALBANY — State police pulled a suicidal man from the Patroon Island Bridge on Sunday morning.

The incident happened about 8 a.m. on the span that carries Interstate 90 over the Hudson River between Albany and Rensselaer. An off-duty state police captain spotted the man on the bridge, sitting on the south side barrier, and reported it to dispatchers. Police identified the man as a 25-year-old from Watervliet.

Troopers from Albany and Rensselaer counties responded, as did members of the Albany police and fire departments, police said.

Troopers took up positions to the rear and side of the man and attempted to talk the despondent man from the barrier. Troopers soon were able to pull the man from harm's way and to safety, police said. Paramedics took him to Albany Medical Center for a mental evaluation.

The incident impacted traffic on the bridge's eastbound lanes for about 15 minutes.
