Mohawk Ambulance on Friday announced it had agreed to acquire Albany-based Capital District Ambulance Service and Doctors Ambulance Service.

The move apparently was a sudden surprise for employees of the two acquired ambulance companies, who told NEWS10 that they got little notice their jobs were being eliminated. NEWS10 reported that 35 people were fired.

Schenectady-based Mohawk Ambulance said in a statement Friday that its personnel would assist the two other ambulance companies continue to provide services. Mohawk also encouraged the now-former employees of Doctors and Capital District to apply for jobs at Mohawk.

Mohawk did not, however, say what -- if anything -- it would do with the equipment, personnel and service area of the two services it is acquiring. A spokesman said Mohawk would have no further comment Friday.

Regulatory approvals are still being secured for the deal.

James P. McPartlon III, president of Mohawk Ambulance Service, said in the statement: “We believe that it was in the best interest of the families of the former founders of Capital District Ambulance Service and Doctors Ambulance Service to sell their assets to preserve the reputation and good will of both companies.”

Mohawk was founded in 1964 and identifies itself as the largest privately owned ambulance service in upstate New York. It uses more than 40 ambulances and emergency response vehicles to provide basic and advanced life support services in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties.
