Watch: Illusionist makes helicopter appear inside Rivers Casino

Hotel 'solidifies Schenectady as a destination market'

SCHENECTADY — Before officials celebrated the grand opening of The Landing Hotel, a special guest had one last trick up his sleeve.

Illusionist Steve Wyrick performed sleight-of-hand tricks and small-scale magic for about an hour Tuesday morning, capping it off by making a helicopter appear in Rivers Casino’s event center. The display marked the grand opening of The Landing Hotel, a 165-room boutique facility adjacent to Rivers Casino.

The hotel began welcoming guests last week, making it the latest in a string of new lodging options in Schenectady. Local leaders took the stage before Wyrick’s act, praising the progress and development in the city in recent years and crediting the casino and hotel with being part of that.

The hotel “solidifies Schenectady as a destination market,” said Rush Street Gaming Chief Operating Officer Ron Baumann, speaking before a crowd of local officials and casino staff.

After several other speakers, Wyrick, who has headlined thousands of shows in Las Vegas and appeared on late-night television, took the stage.

The show was interactive, and Wyrick at one point brought Mayor Gary McCarthy on stage to participate in a card trick. At the start of the bit, Wyrick offered the mayor a beer. He waved his hand over the glass and insisted it would taste like apple juice.

The mayor took a sip, indicating it was still beer.

“Tastes like beer?” Wyrick asked, turning to the audience and revealing the punchline: “I’m getting everybody to drink on the job, I love it.”

Wyrick did various card tricks, transformed a $100 bill into a $1 bill and linked, then un-linked, a few rings taken off the hands of audience members. He concluded the show by raising a curtain, then lowering it to reveal a helicopter on the stage.
