The Golub Corp. is looking to reduce the workforce at its headquarters on Nott Street, but is doing so on a voluntary basis this time, rather than through layoffs.
Company spokeswoman Mona Golub said the offer of voluntary separation was extended to full-time administrative staff at the headquarters as part of the company’s ongoing effort to operate more efficiently.
No further workforce reductions are planned, she said.
The company, which operates more than 130 Price Chopper and Market 32 supermarkets in six states, laid off a total of about 200 people at the headquarters in three separate waves from 2012 through 2016.
About 650 people now work at the headquarters, most of them full time.
As the company has reduced its headquarters staff in recent years, it has simultaneously increased the number of employees in its supermarkets, Golub said. This is through construction of new supermarkets and through its rebranding of Price Chopper stores to Market 32 stores, which require greater staffing due to wider product and service offerings.
A Market 32 converted from a Price Chopper with the same square footage will need 25 percent to 65 percent more employees, she said. A Market 32 that is replacing a smaller Price Chopper needs even more. For example, the company’s newest Market 32, on Route 146 in Clifton Park, has a workforce 167 percent larger than the Price Chopper that was demolished to make way for it.
The Market 32 rebranding will be a lengthy and expensive process, but one the company feels is necessary to position itself for the future in a crowded and competitive industry.
“We are very pleased with the progress not only with reducing costs, but doing so while we are growing our Market 32 brand,” Golub said.
They company as a whole employs more than 20,000 people.
The largest single concentration of Golub Corp. employees is neither at the headquarters nor at any of the supermarkets. It’s at the distribution center in Rotterdam, where about 870 people work.
The workforce there has held steady and not expected to increase or decrease, Golub said.
