ROTTERDAM — A man seeking to get his cellphone repaired this week instead got himself arrested, after a store employee spotted what appears to be child pornography on the device, according to police and prosecutors.

Paul T. Sterman, 62, whom police described as homeless, now faces four felony counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child.

In the phone, investigators found what they believe are four images of boys younger than 16 engaged in sex acts, according to court documents.

Sterman was arraigned and ordered held without bail in Schenectady County jail.

Rotterdam police were called to the Altamont Avenue cellphone store just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to prosecutor Mike Nobles.

"He was still there when the police arrived," Nobles said of Sterman.

Police took Sterman into custody, interviewed him and arrested him, police said.

The investigation was ongoing, and more charges could be filed, police said.

"At this time, it does not appear that Sterman has had any interaction with children in the area," police said in the prepared statement.

They urged anyone with information about the case to call the Rotterdam police detective division at 518-355-7397.
