BALLSTON SPA — A Malta man could spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting this week to multiple sex crimes against children, according to the Saratoga County District Attorney's Office.
Marshall G. Gaudet, 31, of Cottonwood Court, pleaded guilty Tuesday to predatory sexual assault against a child, first-degree rape and two child pornography possession counts.
He is to be sentenced in December to 25 years to life in state prison.
Gaudet admitted to committing multiple sex acts against a child younger than 13. He admitted to the rape dated July 2015. He also admitted to possessing child pornography.
Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen praised the work of the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, the state police Computer Crimes Unit and her prosecutor, Michele Schettino, with resulting in this week's plea and lengthy expected sentence. Gaudet had been set for trial next week.
"The sentence should ensure that he never has the opportunity to harm a young child again," Heggen said in a statement.
Gaudet had faced a 55-count indictment that accused him of using multiple child victims from 2013 to 2016 to create child pornography. He also committed acts of rape and sexual assault.
Gaudet was originally arrested in August 2016, accused of rape and child pornography possession.
Sheriff's officials said then that he befriended a victim on Facebook, convinced her to send explicit photos of herself and then threatened to release the photos to the internet unless she agreed to meet him.
When they met, Gaudet raped the girl and then again threatened to release the photos if she contacted the police, officials said then.
At the time Gaudet was arrested, deputies said then, he appeared to be in conversation chats with multiple other youthful females on his computer. They asked the public for help in finding other victims.
