CLIFTON PARK — A Friday night fire that claimed the life of a Clifton Park man has been deemed accidental, Saratoga County sheriff's officials said Monday.

Officials identified the victim as Jason D. Powers, 41. He lived in the 2 Merion Ave. home with his mother and was home alone when the fire began, officials said.

Fire investigators traced the fire to Powers' bedroom and determined the cause to be accidental, though they did not specify an exact cause.

An autopsy showed Powers died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded to the home about 8:30 p.m. Friday and found heavy smoke and fire coming from an upstairs window at the house.

Responding Saratoga County deputies and state troopers tried to enter the home, but smoke and heat stopped them.

The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by New York State Police, Saratoga County Fire Cause and Origin Team, Jonesville Fire Department, Round Lake Fire Department, Clifton Park Fire Department and Vischer Ferry Fire Department in investigating the fire.
