Skaneateles is a tough football team to play.

It’s an even tougher name to spell.

Skaneateles, a Section III program, is the opponent Friday for Holy Trinity in the Pride’s first-ever trip to the Class C state championship. Both teams are 11-1.

The Daily Gazette put five members of the Pride — players Cam Kiser, Dion Sexton, Tom Thayer and Joe Tortello, plus head coach John Barber — to the test Tuesday to see if they could spell their opponent’s name.

Some did better than others — like Kiser, who got the first seven letters correct before breaking off.

“I lost myself in there,” Kiser said.

One elected to pass on the opportunity.

“Can I spell Skaneateles?” Sexton said. “Um, no, I cannot.”

Overall, the Pride went 1 of 5 in their attempts. Thayer got it correct.

“That’s my guess,” Thayer said after his attempt. “I think it’s pretty close, but I have no idea.”
