'Peter Pan' and J.M. Barrie, a timeline

1902 — The character, Peter Pan, appears in J.M. Barrie's adult novel, "The Little White Bird."

1904 — Barrie writes a play, "Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow up," and London audiences love it.

1905 — A year later it is performed on stage in the U.S. with Maude Adams playing Peter.

1906 — Barrie's publishers extracted chapters 13-18 of "The Little White Bird" and republished them as "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

1911 — Barrie adapted and expanded the play into a novel, calling it "Peter Pan and Wendy."

1924 — Barrie authorizes a silent film version of his play called "Peter Pan," starring Betty Bronson as Peter.

1950 — "Peter Pan" opens on Broadway as a musical by Leonard Bernstein. Jean Arthur is Peter and Boris Karloff plays Captain Hook.

1951 — Disney's "Peter Pan," an animated film, is released.

1954 — "Peter Pan" is reworked for Broadway by Jerome Robbins with Mary Martin playing Peter.

1960 — Mary Martin's "Peter Pan" is broadcast on television.

1976 — NBC telecasts a Hallmark Hall of Fame "Peter Pan," starring Mia Farrow as Peter and Danny Kaye as Captain Hook.

1979 — Broadway revival No. 1 stars Sandy Duncan as Peter.

1990 — Broadway revival No. 2 stars Cathy Rigby as Peter. Two more Rigby revivals in 1991 and 1998.

1991 — Steven Spielberg releases a film called "Hook," with Dustin Hoffman as the captain and Robin Williams as Peter.

2004 — Johnny Depp plays a young J.M. Barrie who meets the family that inspires his book in "Finding Neverland." The film earns seven Oscar nominations.

2012 — "Peter and the Starcatcher," a prequel play based on the "Starcatcher" series by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, debuts in New York City..

2015 — "Finding Neverland," a musical adaptation of the film, opens on Broadway with Matthew Morrison as J.M. Barrie and Albany native Carolee Carmello as Madame du Maurier.

2015 — "Pan," a film loosely based on "Peter Pan," is released starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard.
