LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Anas Mahmoud fell one blocked shot shy of a triple-double Wednesday night to lead Louisville to an 86-60 victory over Siena in the first round of the Gotham Classic at the KFC Yum! Center.

The 7-foot senior from Cairo, Egypt, finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocked shots for the Cardinals (5-2), who led by only one point with 15:26 to play before reeling off 18 straight points.

Sammy Friday has 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Saints (2-6), who made just nine field goals after halftime. Nico Clareth also finished with 15 points.

Quentin Snider added a season-high 16 points, and Ray Spalding had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for Louisville.

Thanks mostly to Mahmoud and Spalding, Louisville had 15 blocks as it rebounded from last week’s consecutive losses to Purdue and Seton Hall that had knocked the Cardinals out of the Top 25.

Louisville led 12-2 after just 3:08, but the Saints rallied and used a 10-0 run that included five Louisville turnovers to take a 31-27 lead. The Cardinals regrouped to regain a 39-36 lead by halftime as Siena missed 10 of its final 11 shots from the floor in the half.

The Saints pulled within 48-47 before four straight points by Mahmoud started the 18-0 run.

The Saints hung around for a while by leading Louisville in some key categories. Siena got 18 offensive rebounds en route to a 21-9 advantage in second-chance points. The Saints’ reserves outscored Louisville’s 43-27.
