MEMPHIS — The University at Albany men’s basketball team came close to registering a quality road win, but the Memphis Tigers pulled away late Tuesday for a 67-58 win at FedExForum.

A layup from junior David Nichols capped an 8-1 run for UAlbany to tie the game at 45 with 10:19 to play. From there, though, Memphis responded with a 13-3 run to seize control. UAlbany never got closer than six points during the game’s final 5:20.

Nichols scored 14 points and junior Joe Cremo had 16 for the Great Danes, who had no other player reach double-digit scoring. Cremo and Nichols combined to shoot 10 of 30.

For Memphis, Kareem Brewton Jr. scored a game-high 19 points.

Memphis (7-2) led UAlbany (10-2) 29-22 at halftime. The Great Danes opened the second half with an 8-1 run, but couldn’t catch Memphis until their second 8-1 run of the half.

Turnovers plagued UAlbany after Nichols’ layup tied the game at 45. Right after that basket, the Great Danes had three consecutive possessions end with turnovers.

UAlbany senior Greig Stire had a game-high 11 rebounds. Overall, UAlbany out-rebounded Memphis 38-33, but the Great Danes had more turnovers (14) than assists (8).

UAlbany shot a season-low 34.4 percent from the field. Memphis made 46.9 percent of its shot.

Memphis and UAlbany played as part of the Gotham Classic. Previously, the programs had never met.

The Great Danes entered Tuesday’s game with a four-game winning streak and were coming off topping Siena College for this year’s Albany Cup.

UAlbany next plays Saturday vs. Canisius at SEFCU Arena.
