Glens Falls junior pours in 50 in win at Schuylerville
Girard III sets Section II scoring record
Glens Falls’ Joe Girard III broke the Section II scoring record Thursday against Schuylerville.

SCHUYLERVILLE - That 3-2 zone defense Schuylerville threw at Joe Girard III Thursday night never stood a chance.

The Glens Falls junior guard drove through it and shot over it in a 50-point game to set the Section II career scoring record in an  81-64 Foothills Council win for the Indians.

Girard hit 50 points exactly for the third straight contest in taking down the area record of 2,682 established by Argyle's Kobe Lufkin last season.

"It's definitely something I've been working for, and something I'm proud of," Girard III said. "I can't thank my teammates and coaches enough for getting me the ball where I needed it."

Girard III needed 41 points to top Lufkin, and reached the magic mark on two free throws 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. That was part of an 8-for-8 free throw showing by the football and basketball star, who also tied the Section II one-game record with 12 3-point hoops to go with two layups and a tip-in.

"That's the third time I hit a milestone from the line," Girard III said. "I got my 1,000th and 2,000th points that way."

Girard III is No. 4 now on New York's career scoring list. Lance Stephensen of Abraham Lincoln (2004-09), now of the Indiana Pacers, is No.1 on the list with 2,946 points.

Girard III is on a fast track to 3,000, with 2,692 points after his performance Thursday night in front of a standing-room-only crowd on the road. Girard III began his record assault as an eighth grader.

"The names he's passed and the names he's going to pass, it's incredible," Glens Falls coach Rob Girard said. (One of the most notable: Glens Falls and BYU legend Jimmer Fredette.)  "He's incredible. As an eighth and ninth-grader, they were getting him the ball to take the big shots."

"I had 31 points in my first game [against Fonda-Fultonville], and hit the game-winning three, and since then, it's been history," Girard III said. "Ever since then I've had all the confidence in the world. I don't know what would have happened if I didn't have a game like that. I don't know if we'd be talking right now about this [Section II record]."

Girard III has scored no fewer than 44 points this season, and had a high of 60 when he set the school record against Amsterdam.

"No defense is going to stop him," Rob Girard said.

Not that Schuylerville and its athletic cast didn't try with its 3-2 zone defense.

"They were going 3-2 with the top guy extended," said Girard, who generated 25 points in each half. "When I got by a guy, another one would jump me. I got by him or I passed it off."

Or he just shot over them, making five 3s in the first half and seven more in the second half. Glens Falls never trailed after his first 3 began the scoring. His last 3 came inside the final minute as the Indians (9-1, 10-1) were putting the Black Horses (7-3, 7-3) away in a game that matched league title contenders.

Lufkin set the Section II 3-point record with 12 during the 2015-16 season in a game against Fort Edward. Girard III had made as many as 11 3s in a game before his dozen dropped through, several coming off the dribble.

"We watched a lot of film on him," said junior Paul Harshbarger, who topped Schuylerville with 27 points. "He's talented. It's hard to beat a team when a guy scores 50."

Girard III's quest for the Section II career record began with a 16-point first quarter when he nailed four 3s.

"It's been a great journey, and we've got a year and a half left," Rob Girard said.

David Barcley added 13 points for Glens Falls. Nick Budesheim had 16 for Schuylerville and Stratton Sherman contributed 12.
