CLIFTON PARK — The Section II swimming and diving championships begin Thursday and run through Saturday at Shenendehowa High School's Aquatic Center.

Competition will be held in Division 1, in which Shenendehowa athletes are seeded first in seven events, and in Division 2, in which Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake athletes own six top seeds.

The competition starts today with diving. Swimming will be contested Friday and Saturday.

Friday/Saturday, March 2-3: State meet at Nassau County Aquatic Center, East Meadow, Long Island.

THE CHAMP IS HERE

The last time Shenendehowa senior Nick Lydon took 11 competitive dives in his home pool, he set a state record with 661.27 points at the Plainsmen's December invitational. The three-time defending Division 1 champ and Florida commit also cracked 600 at the Mohonasen and Owego invitationals.

Shenendehowa divers have won five consecutive Division 1 titles, with Ian Killane placing first ahead of Lydon in 2014, and Adam Bonk taking the top spot in 2013.

RECORD WATCH

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake's 200 medley relay team of Liam Picozzi, Ryan Board, Brandon Bardin and Alex Turczyn went 1:36.48 at the Shenendehowa Holiday Invitational in December to earn the Division 2 top seed. That combined swim was just off the Section II record (1:35.27) set by Picozzi, Board, Bardin and the graduated Jacob Hurteau at last year's state meet when the Spartans finished second.

TOP SEEDS

Four athletes are seeded first in a pair of individual events. They are Kaleb Hotaling of Shenendehowa (200 free, 100 breast) and Neil Horne of Niskayuna (100 fly, 100 back) in Division 1, and Picozzi (100 free, 100 back) and Board (200 IM, 100 breast) in Division 2.

RELAY NOTES

The last time three different teams won relays at the same meet was in 2012 when Bethlehem (200 medley), Shenendehowa (200 free) and Niskayuna (400 free) came out on top in D1. The year before, it happened at the D2 level with Albany Academy (200 medley), Gloversville (200 free) and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (400 free).

That last team to sweep three relays at the same meet? That was Albany Academy in 2013. That's the year Academy and Glens Falls tied for the D2 championship.

LOOKING BACK

Joey Homan was a four-event winner for Shenendehowa in 2017, and the Plainsmen regained their Division 1 title after Shaker put together a two-year run on top. Shenendehowa had a string of eight D1 titles before that. Shaker's Ian McElrath won the D1 500 free and returns as the event's top seed. Steven Yu of Shaker, Brendan Cartwright of Bethlehem and Joe Gravino of Guilderland/Voorheesville also won 2017 races and return.

Albany Academy won the D2 team title in 2017, and has No. 1 seed and defending 500 free champ Bryce Henkle among its returnees. Picozzi, Board and Tim Maggs of CBA/Albany also scored individual wins in 2017 and will look to pad their resumes.
