Joseph Hehir (Letters, March 8) makes a case for keeping students in school full-time, rather then letting them leave early to take part in political activity.
His argument is flawed. He says students get a free education, at taxpayer expense. No. One of the functions of their education is to help them become productive citizens, paying taxes.
It’s not a free education; it’s an education with deferred payment.
More important than that, however, their activities outside the classroom — in this instance particularly — are a valuable part of their education. They are learning a basic fact of any democracy: The system works best if everyone takes part.
