Statue has history

I’m sorry to say that Janet Chen’s March 25 letter to the editor has got it wrong. Lady Liberty belongs not in “Goose Hill,” but where it was originally installed, or somewhere central in the downtown part of the city where it can still honor the efforts of Schenectady’s Boy Scouts.

I feel strongly about this because I was there -- not only at its dedication -- but involved in the fund-raising for it. My name is on a scroll in the time capsule along with my fellow Scouts. At the time I was a member of Cub Scout Pack 25, Den 3. My Den was located in the Mount Pleasant section of the city.

I, too, can understand Ms. Chen’s desire to modernize Gateway Plaza, as it now looks great. But history is history. It needs to be remembered and its patriotic supporters honored. I ask Mayor Gary McCarthy to either reinstall the statue in its original location or in some other prominent downtown location with an appropriate historical marker. It should not be hidden away.
