STILLWATER — Former mayor of Stillwater Village Mayor Ricky Nelson plead guilty Thursday to child pornography charges.

Nelson was arrested in August and charged with five felony counts of possessing a sexual performance of a child.

The investigation into Nelson began when state troopers in the Computer Crimes Unit learned an IP address in Stillwater had been used to download child pornography.

According to the Saratoga County District Attorney's Office, Nelson admitted on Thursday in Saratoga County Court that he had the intent to view images containing sexual conduct by a child younger than 16.

Nelson served as mayor of the village of about 1,700 between April 2015 and September, when he resigned as a result of his arrest.

Nelson is facing 5 to 15 years in state prison, as each count carries a prison term of one to three years. Once he's released from prison, Nelson will be required to register as a sex offender.

Sentencing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on June 19 in Saratoga County Court in Ballston Spa.

The New York State Police's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Computer Crimes Unit, and Forensic Investigation Unit, as well as the Saratoga Bureau of Criminal Investigation, were involved in the case.
