Bus driver parked too long with lights on

Bus driver parked too long with lights on

Edmond Day, Rotterdam

I observed a car going south on Heidelberg Avenue passing a school bus going north at about 7:40 a.m. on April 30.

The school bus was stopped with yellow lights flashing for a prolonged period. Sometimes they do that and just park in one spot with yellow flashing.

A car slowed up, not knowing his intention, I assume.

As the car passed the bus slowly, the bus driver went to red lights flashing and started tooting his horn hysterically at the car. I believe the school bus driver was “driven” by guilt -- guilt over the prospect that his prolonged parking may have created a dangerous situation for children and drivers.  An explanation from the bus driver is called for.

It’s time a law be enacted to penalize school bus drivers who abuse the privilege they have to transport our children. At the very minimum, a yellow light meter needs to be installed on school buses to monitor prolonged yellow light parking.

A daily review should be required by people who hire school bus drivers.

The school bus driver in question needs to seek other employment. He or she isn’t emotionally suited to transport children.
