NISKAYUNA -- A young man who Niskayuna police suspect was trying to commit suicide was taken from the town's Lock 7 late Friday afternoon.
Deputy Police Chief Michael A. Stevens said the man, in his 20s, had taken off his shoes and shirt and was seen in the lock water. People at the lock, located off Lock 7 Road near Rosendale Road, called police.
"Once we got there, he was cooperative," Stevens said. "He came out of the water on his own."
The man, whom police did not identify, was taken to Ellis Hospital for evaluation.
Stephanie Sitnik of Malta, who was fishing with her 11-year-old daughter Aralynn, said the man approached her and began talking nonsense. She said he later walked near brush located on lock grounds.
"I talked to a few strangers," Sitnik said, "but nobody weirded me out but him."
Another person fishing said he saw the saga end -- police walking the man down one of the lock's 50-step staircases.
"He was all soaking wet when he came down the stairs," said the man, who declined to give his name.
