Shenendehowa High School freshman Stevo Poulin earned gold and bronze medals in wrestling over the weekend at the Cadet Pan American Championships in Guatemala City.

The state wrestling champion in the 99-pound weight class added to his growing list of accomplishments with a first in the (45-kg) freestyle division and a third in the Greco-Roman division. Poulin was one of 10 members that made up the United States Cadet (age 15-17) team.

Poulin won four matches by technical fall and outscored his opponents 40-0 in winning the freestyle gold. He beat Angel De Leon of the Dominican Republic in the title match. Poulin went 2-1 in the Greco-Roman competition.

Poulin, who competes for Journeymen Wrestling Club, won the freestyle and was second in Greco-Roman at the U.S. Men's Cadet Pan American Team Trials late last month in Pennsylvania. His freestyle title at that event came with three wins by technical fall, and a 37-4 scoring margin.

As a first-year high school wrestler over the winter, Poulin captured the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division I 99-pound title. His performance at the state tournament was superb, with a decision for the gold and three technical falls before that, and a 58-6 scoring margin.

Poulin joined a Shenendehowa list of state champions that includes brothers Kevin and Greg Parker, Hunter and Austin Meys, Nick Kelley, Tony Fusco and Matt Stein. Before that, Poulin earned Section II Division I and Class A titles, and prevailed at the prestigious Eastern States Classic.

He is the second cousin of Schuylerville senior Orion Anderson, who won his third state title this past season.
