SCHENECTADY - A city man stole more than $2,000 in collections from the Afghan Islamic Center last month, authorities said.
Terrance B. Rouse, 46, of Albany, was arrested lats week and charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal mischief, felonies.
Rouse is accused of entering the center May 22 and taking the money. He is alleged to have gone in to the Brandywine Avenue center, changed into traditional clothing and then took from the collections box, prosecutor Kyle Petit said.
While inside, Rouse also allegedly tampered with the surveillance system, but authorities identified him with the help of his probation officer through images already captured on the system, Petit said. Damage was estimated at about $800. Rouse did not appear to have any connection to the center, though he claimed to have been there before, Petit said.
Rouse remained in custody Tuesday and is awaiting a defense-requested competency evaluation.
