CLIFTON PARK -- Elks Lodge 2466 will host its annual Flag Day celebration on Friday.

The celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the lodge, located at 695 MacElroy Road in Ballston Lake.

The program is open to the public. Members of Boy Scout Troop 246, VFW Post 1498, town officials and representatives of the Shenendehowa Central School District will assist with the ceremony, which will include a history of the flag, scholarship awards, and recognition of the Elks' annual Americanism Essay Contest winners.

The Order of Elks began celebrating Flag Day in 1907. Since then, each Elks Lodge has been required to observe Flag Day annually. The United States Congress formally recognized June 14 as Flag Day in 1949, after the Elks had observed the practice for many years.

A picnic dinner will follow the ceremony.
