SARATOGA SPRINGS -- A Middle Grove man who was stabbed Sunday has died from his wounds, and a Saratoga Springs resident has been charged with murder.

Patrick Collins, 46, of Middle Grove, died at Saratoga Hospital after being stabbed early Sunday afternoon in the area of Zephyr Lane, a mobile home park in the city, police said.

Police announced Monday they have charged Albert Mercer, 62, of 48 Zephyr Lane, with second-degree murder, first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Police believe Mercer stabbed Collins with a large knife during a fight between the men outside Mercer's residence.

The men knew each other, and police do not believe anyone else was involved in the fight. Police also believe they have recovered the murder weapon.

Mercer faces up to 25 years to life, if convicted of the charges filed Monday.

Police released some details of their investigation at a Monday afternoon press conference at City Hall.

Collins' father, David Collins, and his stepmother, Violet, were at the press conference to learn more about what happened.

"They won't tell us anything," Violet Collins said. She and her husband live in Kentucky and arrived less than an hour before the press conference.

"I got a call from (Patrick's) girlfriend yesterday around 10 or 11 a.m., and I was driving," Violet Collins added. "I had to pull over. Then I had to go home and tell [David]."

Patrick Collins worked in the construction industry. David Collins is a former officer of the Saratoga Springs Police Department, according to family members.

"I'm 75 and had numerous heart procedures; he should've been burying me," David Collins said of his son.

Mercer was arraigned by Saratoga Springs City Court Judge Francine Vero and was sent to jail, Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen said.

Mercer was represented by a public defender, Heggen said. A hearing for Mercer was slated for 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Saratoga Springs City Court.

Anyone with information about the stabbing was asked to contact police at 518-584-1800, or anonymously at 518-584-TIPS.

The Saratoga Springs Police Department is investigating with the assistance of the state police Forensic Investigations Unit.
