AURIESVILLE - A man illegally entered the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs last week and stole from a collections box, state police said Thursday.

Now, troopers are asking for the public's help in identifying him.

The incident happened just after 6 a.m. Aug. 2, before the shrine in Auriesville was open to the public, state police Investigator Timothy Cronin said Thursday.

The man, who apparently got in through an unlocked door, is seen on surveillance footage walking around the shrine for about 15 minutes before he got into a collections bin, pocketed an undetermined amount of money and left, Cronin said.

Once found, the man could face potential theft and burglary charges, Cronin said.

The man is seen on the surveillance stills wearing a dark T-shirt and lighter pants. Police released the stills, hoping someone recognizes him.

Anyone with information on the man's identity is asked to contact state police at 518-853-4708. Tips can also be sent through MohawkValleyCrimeStoppers.com.

Mohawk Valley Crime Stoppers put the word out on Facebook Wednesday. Their post had been shared nearly 400 times as of Thursday afternoon.
