SCHENECTADY — The Golub Corp. said Monday it is nearing a decision on the future of its information technology staff.
The Schenectady-based supermarket chain employs dozens of IT workers. But it is looking to partner with a firm specializing in IT services, or outsource the function altogether.
This would be the latest in a series of moves by Golub to reduce costs and increase efficiency. It has also engaged in a series of staff reductions at its new Nott Street headquarters, and offered an entire floor of the building for rent. These moves have come even as the company has increased its overall workforce by adding staff at its Price Chopper and Market 32 supermarkets.
Golub has its major storage and distribution facility in Rotterdam, where it previously was headquartered.
A tipster told The Gazette that approximately 100 IT jobs would be lost through the initiative, but company spokeswoman Mona Golub said that is incorrect. There are not 100 IT employees through the entire company, she explained, and most are expected to be doing the same tasks in the same location under any shared-services or outsourcing agreement Golub Corp. enters. They may be employees of Golub or they may be employees of the other company, but they’ll still be working on Golub tasks.
The point of partnering or outsourcing, she said, is to gain the economy of scale and access to better technology that a much larger and more specialized company would offer.
“We’re always looking for ways to innovate and increase efficiency,” Golub said.
She said no agreement has been finalized, but one likely will be. The question is what shape that deal takes, not whether it happens, she said: The process is far enough along that Golub Corp. has narrowed the field of candidates to finalists.
“We’ve been transparent with our folks about those possibilities,” she said.
She would not say how many IT employees Golub Corp. has, but said they are not facing a wholesale ouster. “Many people will be under this roof doing the same thing,” she added.
