SCHENECTADY -- A block of Union Street downtown was closed for a time Wednesday afternoon, when a rain gutter fell from a railroad bridge there, police said.
The gutter fell from the bridge over Union Street, between Erie Boulevard and Broadway, at around 3 p.m.
Both the bridge and section of Union Street were closed as a precaution, spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey McCutcheon said.
Amtrak officials confirmed the bridge remains structurally sound, police said.
Yellow fire tape stretched across Union on both sides of the bridge and police cars blocked traffic, as crews worked to clear the road. A firetruck was also at the scene.
The bridge is used by train traffic and is located near the downtown Amtrak station.
